Ocimum sanctum
Plant | Ocimum sanctum | Terna small basil leaves are commonly eaten as a salad. Leaves distinctive aroma, strong but soft aroma with a touch of lime. Basil is one of the ingredients for the Pepes.

As fresh vegetables, basil leaves are usually eaten together the cabbage leaves, irisanketimun, and chili sauce to accompany chicken or fried fish. In Thailand it is known sebagaimanglak and also often encountered in local cuisine.

Medical
A bright yellow volatile oil is present in the leaves. The principal constituents of this oil are Eugenol, Eugenol methyl ether and carvacrol. The oil is reported to possess anti-bacterial properties and acts as an insecticide. Ocimum sanctum leaves are abundant in tannins like. Gallic acid, chlorogenic acid and also contain alkaloids, glycosides, and saponins along with the volatile oil. The major active constituent of tulsi leaves include urosolic aci.

As part of the mint family, basil can contain estragol, compounds that are known carcinogens (cancer-triggering) in mice. Although the effects of testing on humans has not been carried out, excessive use should be avoided.

Uses
The seeds, leaves and the roots of Tulasi have great medicinal value. It is used both, internally as well as externally. Tulasi has mild antiseptic, analgesic properties and it relieves the swellings also. Hence, it beneficial, externally, in various skin diseases. The paste of leaves works well, with marica powder, when applied topically in ringworm infestations. The dressing with the pulp of its leaves effectively controls the infections and hastens the healing of chronic infected wounds. The leaves when chewed mitigate the infections of the gums. Instillation of fresh juice of the leaves into ears is an effective domestic medicament for ear aches. The massage with the leaves juice improves the circulation beneath the skin and augments the sensation in the skin. In the headache due to sinusitis, the instillation of juice in the nose facilitates the secretions of kapha and relieves the headache. The dried powder of the leaves canbe inhaled, like a snuff, for the same purpose.
